A British journalist claims Edward Snowden has more secret data that, if revealed, could become the US government's "worst nightmare".

The Guardian journalist, Glenn Greenwald, published leaked documents supplied by Snowden in June that revealed details of secret US surveillance programs.

Greenwald is warning Snowden has more harmful information tucked away in different parts of the world.

In an interview with Argentinean newspaper La Nacion, Greenwald said the US government should be careful in its pursuit of the former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor.

"Snowden has enough information to cause more harm to the US government in a single minute than any other person has ever had," he said.

"The US government should be on its knees every day begging that nothing happen to Snowden, because if something does happen to him, all the information will be revealed and it could be its worst nightmare."

Snowden, 30, is sought by Washington on espionage charges over the leaks, which included evidence of US authorities eavesdropping on global email traffic.

He has been stranded at a Moscow airport since June 23 and is waiting to secure safe passage to Latin America where several counties have offered him asylum.

Greenwald said Snowden would likely accept asylum in Venezuela, but Washington has urged nations not to give him safe passage.

Latin American leaders lashed out at the US after Greenwald said the US targeted most of the region with spying programs that monitored internet traffic.

The journalist said in his interview with La Nacion that Snowden's hidden documents detailed which US spy programs capture transmissions in Latin America and how they work.

"One way of intercepting communications is through a telephone company in the US that has contracts with telecommunications companies in most Latin American countries," he said.
