Religious tolerance? What religious tolerance?

Charges against WA man baseless

Egyptian authorities have today confirmed they have detained an Australian man who reportedly disappeared after participating in a televised debate on religion.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said consular officials from the Australian Embassy in Cairo had requested access to Safaa Al Awadi, 44.
However, the Egyptian General Prosecutor had yet to grant access.
"The Department of Foreign Affairs in Canberra is providing consular assistance to the man's family in Western Australia," she said.
News Limited reported that Mr Al Awadi was in custody accused of being a terrorist and spreading a false religion.
It says he went missing after he took part in a religious debate on Egyptian television.
The daughter of the man detained in Egypt for insulting religion says charges against him are baseless.
Safaa Al Awadi, 44, was charged with insulting religion and denying the tenets of faith, following a television debate about religion in Egypt.
A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman said Australian consular officers were granted access to Mr Al Awadi in a Cairo prison on Sunday and again on Wednesday.
Mr Al Awadi appeared at the Supreme State Security Prosecution Office in Cairo on Monday and in court on Tuesday.
His detention has been extended for 15 days.
Mr Al Awadi's daughter Zeinab said there was no evidence for the charges against her father.
"They say the charge was despising the religion of Islam and putting extremist views," she told ABC Radio on Thursday.
"Obviously they have no evidence of that, because that's not true.
"We're not here to put extremist views; we're here to call people to unite the three religions, Islam, Christianity and Judaism."
Mr Al Awadi's detention for almost three weeks was both distressing and frustrating for his family.
"Until now they have no evidence about any of what they have said at all, no evidence at all," Ms Al Awadi said.
Mr Al Awadi will be questioned again by Egyptian authorities on Thursday.
DFAT is providing consular assistance to Mr Al Awadi's family.
It appears that in Islam there are two norms of religious tolerance.
Christians should turn the other cheek to muslim insults and demands about the Christian faith, but should never ever discuss the faith of Islam.
To do so would bring down upon their heads the wrath of Allah and his representatives on earth.
Watch out western world, we are heading down a very dangerous path of religious tolerance. Turn the other cheek yes, but defend your beliefs when they are being assailed or else very soon our children will be bowing down towards Mecca.

Wife who set husband's genitals alight on murder charge

A MOTHER of three accused of murdering her husband by setting his genitals alight allegedly told neighbours she was a "jealous wife" who had learned he was having an affair, a court heard yesterday.

Rajini Narayan, 44, appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court where she faced an upgraded charge of murder after her husband, Satish Narayan, died on December 27 from his injuries after being burned in his home.
Crown prosecutor Lucy Boord, opposing bail , told the court it was alleged Ms Narayan doused her husband's genitals with petrol as he slept in their Unley home and set him alight about 5.30am on December 7.
It is believed a blaze erupted after Mr Narayan jumped out of bed and knocked over a bottle of petrol, which spread to a nearby property and caused about $1 million damage.
Ms Narayan and the couple's three children escaped their burning home unharmed
Ms Boord said it was alleged that Ms Narayan was heard outside the house saying that her husband loved another woman and was having an affair.
It was alleged Ms Narayan said: "His penis should belong to me. I wanted to burn his penis so it didn't belong to anyone else."
She is also alleged to have said "it was just his penis I wanted to burn" and that she did not mean for "anything like this" to happen. She allegedly said that her husband "hugs" the other woman.
Mr Narayan suffered burns to 85 per cent of his body and died in the Royal Adelaide Hospital 20 days after the fire.
Ms Narayan was originally charged with causing serious harm to her husband, arson and three counts of endangering life. The aggravated causing serious harm charge was upgraded to murder after Mr Narayan died.
It is understood the Narayan family arrived in Adelaide several months ago from Canberra after Mr Narayan was employed on the Australian Navy's Air Warfare Destroyer project.
Ms Narayan, who appeared in the dock with her back to the public gallery during the short bail hearing, has yet to enter a plea to the charges.
Her bail application was adjourned until Friday.

Penis burning wife Rajini Narayan found guilty of manslaughter

A DEVOTED wife who fatally set her husband alight while trying to burn a mark on his penis has been acquitted of murder.
After deliberating for nine hours over two days, a Supreme Court jury today found Rajini Narayan not guilty, by majority verdict, of murder.
They instead ruled her crime - throwing petrol and a lit candle onto the back of her husband, Satish - was manslaughter.
Narayan - who has long maintained she had no intention to kill Satish - showed little reaction to the verdict.
Her lawyers told the court she had offered, prior to trial, to plead guilty to  manslaughter.
Satish died 20 days after his wife confronted him about the suspected affair in their Unley home in December 2008.
Prosecutors alleged Narayan threw petrol and a candle on her husband's back, setting him and the house alight.
They said she was motivated by the affair and two decades of beatings administered by Satish.
Giving evidence in her defence, Narayan denied those claims.
"I did not like to be beaten (but) I told myself I had to be better, I have to try harder," she said.
"I deserved it because, in my mind, I was not the perfect wife for my perfect husband... I idolised him, he was my hero.
"I did not speak back to him because you do not fight with your god."
Narayan compared her marriage to the Hindu religious tale of Lord Ram and Sita.
In the story, Sita is kidnapped by a demon king - after rescuing her, Lord Ram ensues her purity by having her walk through fire.
After a series of emails and letters convinced her Satish was having an affair, she decided to purify her husband with fire.
"A bizarre idea came to me... I would use a candle to burn the tip of his penis," she said.
"It would be like circumcision, or just like he placed that red dot on my forehead at our wedding.
"It was like I had all the powers of the goddess to save my husband, my lord... it did not occur to me that it was going to be dangerous."
She denied having any intent to hurt him, but said she "snapped" when he called her a "fat, dumb bitch".
"I felt everything drain out of me... the love, it wasn't there in that instant," she said.
Today, Justice John Sulan remanded Narayan on continuing bail for sentencing submissions next month.
As she left the dock, Narayan hugged her solicitor and her daughters - she declined to comment outside court.

I would hate to think what would happen to the poor bloke if she did not adore him "like a god". As it is she tried to rob him of the family jewels and ended up killing him. Such love and devotion is certainly "divine"!

Fatso the croc bites drunk who wanted a ride

July 13, 2010 - 10:07AM

A drunk man has been bitten on the leg after trying to ride a 5m saltwater croc named Fatso.
The man, who had earlier been turfed out of a Broome tavern for being drunk, told police he climbed into Fatso's enclosure at a local crocodile park because he wanted to give him a pat about 10.15pm on Monday.
"He made his way into the crocodile park and then climbed into the compound with a large, male 5m saltwater croc named Fatso," said Sergeant Roger Haynes.
"He has attempted to sit on its back and the croc has taken offence to that and has spun around and bit him on the right leg.
"For an unknown reason, the crocodile has let him go and he's managed to scale the fence and exit the park."
He made his way back to the nearby tavern to get help.
Sgt Haynes said the man, who was not a local, was extremely lucky to be alive.
"No person in their right mind would try to sit on a 5m crocodile," he said.
"We do know he's from the eastern states and he doesn't seem to have a very good understanding of the nature of saltwater crocs in the Kimberley."
He said the 36-year-old had some "very nasty lacerations" and would spend some time in hospital, as croc wounds are prone to infection.
"Saltwater crocodiles ... once they get hold of you, are not renowned for letting you go. He's lucky to have escaped with his life."
When examining this story, I was surprised that the poor crocodile didn't suffer alcohol poisoning after taking a bite at the leg of this drunken moron whose blood alcohol level must have been around 100% proof.
And they try to tell us that beasts are brainless. Yeah!

Jail: not an effective escape route

Man tries to escape police by jumping into prison

A motorist attempting to escape police in America must have thought he'd given them the slip when he abandoned his car and jumped over a fence - only to realise that he'd landed in a prison yard.

Police in Garfield Heights, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio say that the badly thought-out escape attempt followed a high-speed chase, which reached speeds of 90mph.

The chase ended when the driver and his passengers abandoned the vehicle. The driver and one of the passengers made a break for the nearby fence, and scaled it - apparently not aware that it was the outside fence of the state women's prison.

The two prison-breakers were arrested, along with two other passengers who chose to flee in a different direction. This prison break can be put down as "out of the fire and into the frying pan" - literally!!!

Duke of hazards

Er, no, your highness, I do not give a jolly good show
March 14, 2010
THE Queen's gaffe-prone husband has proved that, at 88, he is as undiplomatic as ever by asking a young sea cadet if she worked in a strip club.

Prince Philip, a former naval officer infamous for his colourful off-hand remarks, was visiting cadets in Exeter, south-western England, when he put the question to Elizabeth Rendle.

The 24-year-old, who works as a barmaid in a nightclub, was asked what she did for a living.

"I just said that I worked in a club, and then he asked, 'Oh, what, a strip club?"', she told London's Daily Telegraph. "Obviously, I said, 'No', and then he said, 'Oh, it's a bit too cold today, anyway.'

"I was quite surprised but I think he was just trying to lighten the mood. It was a joke and we were all laughing, which drew everyone else's attention to us.

"I don't think he put his foot in it. It was a joke and I didn't take any offence. I think he was just putting people at their ease."

The Duke of Edinburgh's comments are usually intended to put the other person at ease when meeting royalty but have landed him in hot water on foreign visits.

Dontopedalogy (sic)is the science of opening your mouth and putting your foot in it, a science which I have practiced for a good many years. - Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip (and it appears that after so many years of practice his highness has perfected the art of putting his foot in his mouth whenever he opens the latter!)

Luxury resort is strictly for pets

11 Jan 10 @ 08:30am

TERRIGAL’S newest luxury resort has its own lagoon, lap pool and a soon-to-be-completed day spa.

The staff even make iceblocks on site for those particularly warm, summer days.

But before you rush to book yourself in, human guests are not accommodated at this sprawling 2ha property, which took a year and more than $1 million to build.

Pet Resorts Australia opened its Terrigal business, catering primarily for dogs and cats, in the days before Christmas and the response has already been overwhelming.

The staff welcomed their first guests on December 21 and on December 24, they had 110 dogs "check in’’.

Pet Resorts Australia chief executive officer Sarah Peters-Denning said Terrigal was chosen due to its accessibility and popularity as a holiday destination.

Ms Peters-Denning said their extensive research left them with no concerns as to the possible success of the venture during the current economic climate.

"People still love their pets and people are also holidaying closer to home,’’ she said.

While the luxury suites, which will include a Tiffany-themed room are still to be completed, they will include their own plasma television and webcam, so owners can check in on their pets.

The standard accommodation is also impressive, with underfloor heating and courtyard access in separate villas for large and small dogs. The pets are then matched based on their breed, age and temperament.

There’s no better recommendation than repeat business with the Terrigal resort already boasting its first return client a six-year-old labradoodle named Rufus Henry.

Pet Resorts Australia managing director Steve Austin said once the resort was fully established, the organisation would then work towards building the educational side of the business. He hoped to work in closely with schools in providing vocational experience for students, as well as putting on educational demonstrations. ....meanwhile at the other side of the world.... Children and families are fighting for survival in an area facing severe drought and the deadly threat of famine. Every seven seconds, a child dies at the hand of a silent killer. Hunger. Right now, millions of children in Africa are at risk of starvation. Having a reliable source of nutritious food cuts a community's child death rate by half. Still, millions of children go to bed hungry each night.
