$50,000 Mercedes Benz pulled apart in carpark to rescue snake

A SNAKE with a taste for expensive cars caused a bit of havoc at Tuggerah last Saturday.
After slithering its way through the Westfield Shopping Centre carpark it took refuge under a $50,000 Mercedes Benz and then wriggled its way into the body shell of the car.
A shopper who saw it called out the Central Coast Volunteer Rescue Association to help.
They had to start pulling apart the luxury car in order to snare the snake.
“We had to jack it up and remove the wheels and guard liners and then the rear bumper,” Volunteer Andrew Bradley said.
When the snake was finally caught, it was discovered to be an American corn snake, which are illegal to have as a pet in Australia.
Licences can be obtained to own one, but are usually restricted to zoos.
Corn snakes are not venemous and kill their prey, usually small mammals and birds, by constriction.
The snakes are popular pets in the US due to their small size and variety of colours.
After bagging the corn snake, the rescue team then had to reassemble the car for the owner.
Hot weather has prompted a spate of snake sightings in recent weeks.
The rescue team has been kept busy in the past two weeks, rescuing more than 20 snakes around the coast.
